Supporting the Preservation of Native American Heritage

The Cultural Arts Fund of Wood County (CAFoWC) proudly provided funding support for the Black Swamp Intertribal Foundation’s 22nd Annual Pow Wow – They Walked Here Before Us: A Woodland Indian Celebration, held September 21–22, 2024, at the Seven Eagles Historical Education Center in Grand Rapids, Ohio.

This vibrant weekend celebration brought together dancers, drummers, artisans, and families from across the region to honor and preserve Native American culture and traditions. Through music, dance, and storytelling, the Pow Wow offered the public an opportunity to experience the beauty and depth of Woodland Indian heritage firsthand.

CAFoWC’s funding helped bolster this longstanding cultural event, ensuring that the traditions, regalia, and songs of the region’s Indigenous peoples continue to be shared with new generations. The choice of venue, the historic Seven Eagles Historical Education Center added even greater significance, allowing visitors to connect with both the living culture of the Pow Wow and the preservation of an important local heritage site that also benefits from renewed public engagement.

Performances included Douglas Blue Feather (Cherokee), a multiple award-winning Native American flutist, and the powerful rhythms of Gray Cloud Singers (Pennsylvania), Southern Singers (Ohio), and South-eastern Water Spider of Ohio. Dancers in full traditional attire filled the grounds with color and movement, offering an unforgettable celebration of community, respect, and resilience.
